AN EVENTFUL SPORTING EVENT FOR STATE ATHLETES
It was an eye opening experience for some and it rekindled old memories to be once
again be in the limelight for others.
Among the 32 pencak silat and karate athletes from Penang part of the Occupy Beach Street “Car Free Day” event recently [10 Nov] included athletes who had won medals at national and international competitions and also talented junior athletes who have yet to represent the state at competitions.
The pencak silat senior athletes that took part in the event were the 2012 Malaysia Games at Pahang medalists Helmi Asmawi Zakaria, Fadzli Husni and Ariffudin Ismail and 2008 Malaysia Games at Terengganu Nur Fitriyah Mohd Baid.
Pencak silat coach who is also the SEA Games Laos 2009 silver medalist Shuhairi Chin also took part in the performance together with the senior athletes proved that they still had the skills and agility to leave the audience in awe.
Apart from the performance by the senior athletes, some 12 state Malaysia Games pencak silat athletes also did their fair share in attracting the surrounding crowd.
Prior to the pencak silat performance, Malaysia Games karate athletes Adrian Ang Shu Sien and Amelia Ngooi, both national competition medalists, together with 15 junior karate athletes performed classic karate moves and stance swiftly and accurate synchrony garnering loud cheers and clapping from an audience of over a hundred people of all ages and gender.
Each sports were given two 20 minutes performance slot from 9am to about 11am which proved to be a crowd pulling feat.
Aside from the sports performances, a mini exhibition was also set up and flyers on the activities of the Council were distributed to the crowd.
Sports which will be featured on the coming Sunday [17 Nov] are Petanque, Woodball and Lawn Bowl. There will be performances by the state athletes and even public tryout sessions on site.
